Background:
Environmental pollution is a global menace and Nepal is by no means an exception. Environmental pollution in the country is steadily growing with adverse impact on its people. Growing population, rapid urbanization and intensive industrial development are the primary causes of pollution. The environmental problems and development problems are closely interrelated. The process of development often leads to environmental problems such as air, water and soil pollution, contamination and bioaccumulation of toxic materials in environment, unplanned settlements with consequential effects on health of the people, local environment, agriculture and water resources.
Population growth, growing demand for resources and urbanization are causing serious environmental problems in Nepal. Lack of awareness among people, unemployment, poverty, lack of conducive policies, weak implementation of rules and regulations are key causal factors. Air pollution has become one of the world’s biggest environmental health problems. In Nepal, the number of private vehicles and factories has increased rapidly over the last few years. Dust and toxic gases in the air in towns are a primary factor behind increasing respiratory problems among people. According to WHO, seven million deaths globally are due to air pollution. Eighty percent of 3.7 million deaths are from stroke and heart diseases, 11% from pulmonary disease and 6% from cancer that can be linked to outdoor pollution. The gravity of the pollution related health costs are obvious.
Fortunately, efforts to combat environmental pollution across the globe are on the rise. Science and technological advances are developing solutions to reduce pollution. Scientists in Nepal also are doing their best and there is growing amount of knowledge and technologies for sharing in the country.
